Just like the Greek God, Posidonia seagrass is <\/span><b>endemic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Mediterranean Sea and reigns over it. This marine plant is <\/span><b>full of life<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: it can survive for thousands of years! The Posidonia seagrass can be seen at the surface and as deep as 40 meters. It can be recognized thanks to:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Long strips of green leaves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can be confused with seaweed ;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Little flowers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a main part of its reproduction cycle. Researchers get excited whenever they spot a new flower. They usually bloom in the fall and turn into fruits in the winter. The current helps with pollination, just like the wind helps with pollination on land. Unfortunately, the Posidonia seagrass <\/span><b>doesn&rsquo;t bloom every year anymore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plump<\/span><b> fruits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called <\/span><b>\u201colives of the sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, that float on the surface when ripe. Their thick skin helps them float, and they move with the currents, sprouting far away from their original plant.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>The <\/b><b><i>Posidonia oceanica<\/i><\/b><b> seagrass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an underwater forest that needs sunlight to survive. Part of the photosynthesis is stored in the roots, and the other part helps with growing the leaves. It influences the cycle of life for marine species, whose entire existence depends on it. It plays a part in<\/span><b> balancing the coasts <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>transmitting organic matter <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to other ecosystems. This is why the Posidonia seagrass is considered as one of the most precious marine ecosystems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.2. An endangered treasure<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Posidonia seagrass of the Mediterranean&rsquo;s growth is very slow, only<\/span><b> a few millimeters each year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Yet, proportionally, the lungs of the sea produce more oxygen in a square meter than the Amazon forest.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Posidonia plants have decreased by <\/span><b>more than a third in the last 50 years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This regression worries researchers. Human activity is responsible:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pollution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cloudy water from <\/span><b>suspended particles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, limiting the amount of sunlight, which is essential in their development ;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anchorage of boats and fishnets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (non-eco-responsible tourism, trawling) destroying in a few seconds a huge amount of Posidonia seagrass, that are sometimes several a few hundreds of years old ;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Beach cleaning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which accelerates coastal erosion ;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global warming caused by CO2 emissions, changing the <\/span><b>pH of seawater<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, causing a natural disruption and killing the plants in deep waters. <\/span><b>The rise of seawater temperature <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allows other more resilient species to overtake the Posidonia seagrass.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 1998, the <\/span><b>Bern Convention <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been regulating essential biotope protection for marine species. A significant<\/span><b> preservation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> communication <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effort is made by cities and nature reserves for<\/span><b> habitat conservation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nowadays, we don\u2019t have a choice anymore.
